Objective

Oversees and administers the credit risk management of the Bank’s commercial loan portfolio.  Supports the Business Plan and carries out the intentions of the Credit Policy.  Actively participates in a consultative role with Relationship Managers in implementing and interpreting credit policy through discussions of:

 

  • The Relationship Manager’s recommendations for approvals of transactions
  • Structure and documentation of credits
  • Plans of action on deteriorating situations
  • Ratings

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Assists the Chief Credit Officer in the development and administration of credit policy.
  • Provides advice and guidance to the bank’s lending management on policies, as well as loan relationships. 
  • Participates in the development of the Bank’s credit granting strategies as part of the planning effort through interaction with the Chief Credit Officer.
  • Participates in credit approvals through approval process and Credit Policy Committee.
  • Approves exceptions to policy, as authorized.
  • Approves loan disbursements, wires, overdrafts, and collateral releases, as needed.
  • Recommends lending authorities to the Chief Credit Officer
  • Reports signs of deterioration in specific relationships to the Chief Credit Officer and Loan Review.
  • Performs an ongoing review of credits through discussions with relationship managers, portfolio managers and credit analysts and quickly report findings to the Chief Credit Officer and Loan Review.
  • Ensures that delinquency, line renewals and loan maturities are handled in a timely manner.
  • Participates in and makes presentations concerning credit risk at meetings of senior management. 
  • Serves as a resource for credit policy and procedure interpretation for commercial lending officers. 
  • Reviews lending policies to ensure regulatory statutes are met.  
  • Advises lenders on deteriorating situations and directly manages more complex loans considered to be workouts.
  • Assists in the training of credit analysts and junior relationship managers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Credit Officer. 

Essential Functions

While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to move about to various locations to attend meetings and accomplish tasks.  The employee will need to travel and operate a motor vehicle.  Some mobility in order to retrieve and file paperwork is necessary.  The employee is expected to operate a computer terminal.  Communicating and the ability to exchange information are essential.  Sedentary work involves sitting for long periods at a time.  The employee is required to perform such activities as prepare and analyze data and inspect documents. 

 

DECISION MAKING:

There are several functions that require good judgment and decision making responsibilities, e.g., credit authority and administrative duties.  These responsibilities require good communication and understanding while working with the Relationship Managers and Executive Management.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:

Every credit decision, administrative responsibility and recommendations to Executive Management is supported by personal responsibility, operating within the Bank’s credit policies and code of ethics, e.g, extend credit with proper underwriting guidelines with an acceptable risk

Knowledge - Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Financial Management or Business Administration; MBA preferred. 
  • 10 – 15 years progressive experience as a credit officer or comparable experience.
  • Excellent skills in credit evaluation and underwriting.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills; verse in negotiations.
  • Intermediate skills in the Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
